ROBBING THE KONG BY GRACIE OTTO

Side-note presents...

Gracie Otto’s “Robbing the Kong” is a bewitching reverie that plays with the dilemma of whether we are pawns in a grand schematic masterpiece or masters of our own universe. Dragon pieces from the age-old Chinese game of Mahjong serve as symbolic portents as the film follows the ethereal Sylvia Hoeks through new starts, sweet success and, fittingly, surrendering to the unknown. By nuancing the divide of dreams from reality, the film makes one wonder, in which state of being are we (and Sylvia) truly alive? Or is being alive the sum of our imaginary and physical experience? In the words of the Mahjong master herself, “I can’t tell you what’s real!” - Side-note.com
